Oman Palaeokarst Research

Dissolution associated with subaerial exposure is thought to be responsible for much of the secondary porosity in the Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs of northeast Arabia. However, the location of these subaerial exposure surfaces in time and space has not been well documented. Outcrops in the Central Oman Mountains provide an excellent opportunity to detect the existence of subaerial exposure surfaces and understand the potential influence of the exposure surfaces on reservoir development.

Regional Expertise

Work in this region builds on two CASP field seasons in 2002 and 2003 in the Adam Foothills along the southern front of the Central Oman Mountains. This work and subsequent laboratory analysis has revealed evidence for palaeokarst and subaerial exposure at several levels in the Natih, Shu’aiba and Lower Kharaib formations. These surfaces are linked with the development of enhanced porosities.
