Black Sea Project: Bulgaria Data Package

This package brings together all of CASP’s Black Sea Project research relating to the geology and hydrocarbon prospectivity of the East Balkan thrust belt and the southwestern Black Sea. It combines literature and extensive field observations and analysis within five reports released between 2014-2018 that: Review the geological setting of the East Balkans and its Late Cretaceous to Neogene stratigraphy; describe and interpret 64 outcrop localities and the Samotino Iztok, More and Melrose-1 wells within that stratigraphic context to document its sedimentological development; describe 52 onshore and 16 offshore sandstone and limestone samples to constrain the composition, diagenetic history and provenance of key elements of the basin fill; document poroperm data from 31 onshore and 13 offshore samples to provide insight into reservoir performance; describe the composition and provenance of 8 modern beach sands to constrain longshore sediment pathways, and; describe seven thermochronometric, 18 biostratigraphic, 13 Rock-Eval and seven kerogen and thermal maturity determinations.

Reports included in the package:

  • The petrography and provenance of modern Turkish and Bulgarian beach samples
  • The field geology of the East Balkan thrust belt, northeast Bulgaria; implications for offshore reservoir quality
  • East Balkan provenance study, northeast Bulgaria
  • Thermochronometric, poro-perm and biostratigraphic analyses of samples from the East Balkan thrust belt, northeast Bulgaria
  • Facies, provenance, and porosity-permeability of Eocene–Oligocene strata in the Bulgarian offshore, Western Black Sea
